Tom Hanks on WWII 75th Anniversary, NY Times

BEYOND THE WORLD WAR II WE KNOW

We Are Still Living the Legacy of
World War II
Act III of the war — After the War — is now simply part of our daily reality, in America and globally, writes Tom Hanks.

By Tom Hanks
Sept. 2, 2020

For our “Beyond the World War II We Know,” documenting lesser-known stories from the war, and to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the war, we asked the actor Tom Hanks to write about the complicated narrative of the conflict — and its aftermath.

In the spring of 1939 — “Before the War,” as folks of that generation would say — the New York World’s Fair began a gloriously naïve celebration of “Mankind’s Progress” and visions of America’s future. President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened the fair in a ceremony that was, no lie, broadcast on television. In fact, there were early versions of TVs on display at the fair, along with state-of-the-art railroad trains, airplanes, ocean liners, Crosley radios, a giant typewriter and the new Ford sedans fairgoers could drive themselves on the “Road of Tomorrow” — an upbeat adieu! to the Great Depression, to what was the first act of many American lives.

Mount Athos - Feature Doc

Mount Athos on a peninsula off the cost of Greece is one of Europe's last remaining secrets: a monks' republic. Access to women is strictly denied and in order to keep unwanted tourists out, visas are granted only to pilgrims and workers.
This is one of the very rare occasions, a filmmaker was given access to all forms of monastic life on the holy mountain. Enjoy!

In 2015, the book publishing market generated over $113,000,000,000 dollars [1]. That’s billion. $113 billion!
And here’s the thing…
It’s growing!
It’s estimated to break through $120-billion by 2020.
That’s a huge amount of money! In fact, it’s so big, it’s hard to really grasp it. So let’s compare it to something.
If you ask the average person, which makes more money… movies or books, they would probably answer “movies.” But they would be wrong.
The global box office revenue for 2016 was a mere $38-billion [2]. That’s only a third of the book industry.

Sinai became widely known, particularly in Europe, with the spreading of the fame and cult of St. Catherine. Symeon Metaphrastes contributed greatly in making the life of the Saint known to the laity when, in the 10th century, he wrote on “the martyrdom of the great Martyr and in the name of Christ victorious Saint Catherine”.

There are fewer than six million Orthodox Christians living in the United States today. However, it is the second largest denomination in the world with Orthodox churches on all seven continents and around 225 million believers.
