Andrei Oprescu's documentary about Mount Athos, People of the Holy Mountain, is a true masterpiece, gaining access into a world that is rarely  seen on camera. A one thousand year old story waiting to be told
Mount Athos is perhaps one of the most fascinating places on Earth yet little is known about it and the monastic community living there.

Some could arguably say Mount Athos is a living museum, filled with medieval fortress-like churches, artefacts and fully inhabited by a men-only society who lives by ancient traditions. Never being a place of interest for the mass tourism and barely ever having any attention in the press, does not come as a surprise. The truth be told this was well premeditated for centuries. It is this secrecy that helped Mount Athos preserve a micro society that lives by medieval rules to this day.

Most of us have seen movies about "Robin Hood" or read relevant books about the hero of the poor, but few of us know that Robin of Lockley was an Orthodox Christian who actually died because of his faith.

He who brought to light the true story of Robin Hood was the Greek-American Orthodox Priest, Fr. John Romanidis († 2001), a graduate of Yale University and later a professor at the Theological Schools of Harvard, Athens, Thessaloniki and Boston's Holy Cross.

Late Fr. John, revealed that Robin was an Orthodox rebel who, along with his close friend "Little John", fought against the Franco-Norman invaders at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD.

BEYOND THE WORLD WAR II WE KNOW

We Are Still Living the Legacy of
World War II
Act III of the war — After the War — is now simply part of our daily reality, in America and globally, writes Tom Hanks.

By Tom Hanks
Sept. 2, 2020

For our “Beyond the World War II We Know,” documenting lesser-known stories from the war, and to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the war, we asked the actor Tom Hanks to write about the complicated narrative of the conflict — and its aftermath.

In the spring of 1939 — “Before the War,” as folks of that generation would say — the New York World’s Fair began a gloriously naïve celebration of “Mankind’s Progress” and visions of America’s future. President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened the fair in a ceremony that was, no lie, broadcast on television. In fact, there were early versions of TVs on display at the fair, along with state-of-the-art railroad trains, airplanes, ocean liners, Crosley radios, a giant typewriter and the new Ford sedans fairgoers could drive themselves on the “Road of Tomorrow” — an upbeat adieu! to the Great Depression, to what was the first act of many American lives.

Mount Athos on a peninsula off the cost of Greece is one of Europe's last remaining secrets: a monks' republic. Access to women is strictly denied and in order to keep unwanted tourists out, visas are granted only to pilgrims and workers.
This is one of the very rare occasions, a filmmaker was given access to all forms of monastic life on the holy mountain. Enjoy!
